Good-bye, Opus

Cartoonist Berkeley Breathed bids farewell to popular character

After 30 years, cartoonist Berkeley Breathed is bidding adieu to his charming, politically astute penguin of Bloom County and Opus. His new project is Pete & Pickles, a children's book about a very sad pig. Breathed spoke recently with National Public Radio.

I am torn about this one, Deb. I never (try as I might) could get into Bloom County, though I did like Opus as an 'everyman' (everypenguin?' I don't know, but the rhythm of it never worked for me. Kind of like Doonesbury. Doonesbury to me was always a bit arrogant and superior. Now, with Calvin and Hobbes, however, you're talking high art and I still miss it. In fact, I'm old enough that I still miss Pogo.

Ian: I feel the same way about Bloom County and Opus. But I know the strips had their fans.

But Calvin and Hobbes: THAT was the strip that stole my heart. In many ways, Calvin represents ny inner child. :-)

Oh, my gosh, Ian! You have conjured up so many wonderful memories of reading those strips!
