Colleges on the cutting edge of technology

America's most connected schools

Cornell University. Southern Methodist University. University of Missouri-Rolla. What do they all have in common? These universities are among two dozen campuses identified as the most wired schools in the country.

Today's students depend on technology to live, work and play. And today's colleges have to provide high-tech tools in order to attract the best applicants. The third annual edition of "The Princeton Review's Most Connected Campuses" tells you which 25 campuses are the closest to the cutting edge - and why. Forbes.com provides details in a special report.

It used to be "ack! I can't go anywhere without my watch!"...then came the "oh no, I forgot to take my beeper!"...down to "dude, I can't find my cell phone"...and these days "it's been 2 days now and I haven't checked my email yet!"...I mean, can anyone living in the fast lane or in the "wired" lane imagine being "unwired" for even a single day? It's almost like an addiction: being online and doing everything online. Then with this article you posted, it made me think whether "cutting edge technology" doesn't feed this addiction even more?

Well, that's just me and my pessimistic view. Actually I think it's fantastic how the world has become a tiny village now (online, that is). I'm just sometimes a bit scared that kids get so distracted with computer related stuff that old-fashioned blackboard and chalk just won't cut it anymore.

One last thing, as soon as we got online and made full use of computers for presentation, I also realized how my attention span (especially in reading) has shortened...a lot!

And I guess it shows here with my non-coherence...! (sorry)

Cecilia: Sometimes I think you and I are living parallel lives. :-)

One day, when I was at the office, the phone lines and computers were down. I groaned, "I might as well go home. I can't get any work done here." I was planning to go home and work!

I think you're absolutely right about the technology addiction and being watchful of the habits of children. In my case, my kids are fine. It's Mother who has to be pulled away from the computer.

My daughter has actually said to me, "Mom, step away from the computer - NOW."

As for the attention span, the same goes for me. You are quite coherent, Cecilia. Either that or we both are traveling at warp 9, so it doesn't matter!

Warp 9. Oops. My love for Star Trek is showing. :-)

LOL. Well, it certainly is a relief to be understood!

I actually heard that same groan from my colleague but he is a Communications officer so his work totally depends on the computer: "Oh no, systems are down! I am technically unemployed!"...

What a great quote from your colleague! LOL
Since he and I do the same type of work, I totally identify with that statement!
