John Hope Franklin, revered historian, dies at 94

U.S. historian and civil rights advocate John Hope Franklin, credited with helping create the field of African-American history, died on Wednesday at age 94.

Franklin's book From Slavery to Freedom: A History of African-Americans, published in 1947, is still considered the definitive account of the black experience in America. The longtime Duke professor died of congestive heart failure at Duke Hospital in Durham, North Carolina.

He worked with Thurgood Marshall, later the first black U.S. Supreme Court justice, on the landmark Brown v. Board of Education case in the 1950s in which the Supreme Court declared segregation in public schools unconstitutional.

Franklin joined civil rights protesters in a 1965 march for voting rights led by the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. in Montgomery, Alabama. In 1997, he was appointed chairman of President Bill Clinton's One America Initiative, charged with directing a national conversation on race relations.

The grandson of a slave, Franklin's scholarly work was informed by his first-hand experience with racism.

Reuters tells the story of an encounter Franklin had prior to being honored by Clinton:

In a speech in 2005, he said that on the evening before he received the Presidential Medal of Freedom from Clinton in 1995, a woman at his club in Washington asked him to get her coat. About the same time, a man at a hotel handed his car keys to Franklin and told him to get his car.

"I patiently explained to him that I was a guest in the hotel, as I presumed he was, and I had no idea where his automobile was. And, in any case, I was retired," Franklin said.

For a thoughtful tribute to Franklin, check out a column by Chicago Sun-Times columnist Mary Mitchell.

President Barack Obama released this statement:

Because of the life John Hope Franklin lived, the public service he rendered, and the scholarship that was the mark of his distinguished career, we all have a richer understanding of who we are as Americans and our journey as a people.

On a personal note, From Slavery to Freedom was required reading when I was an undergraduate. I recently was thrilled to see that my daughter is taking a class where she is studying Franklin's work.

Dumping on the passive voice

IN THE DECADES since Ronald Reagan's famous non-apology for the Iran-Contra scandal - "mistakes were made" - we've gotten used to treating the passive voice as a shady customer. It's shifty and craven, weak and flabby, we say. But do we have any idea what we're talking about? - Jan Freeman, The Word

Do we writers get it all wrong when it comes to the passive voice? The Boston Globe's Jan Freeman thinks so. Read what she has to say in Active resistance.

Shortcut to humiliation

The world is all a-Twitter, or so it seems. Whenever you post anything on the Web, assume everyone, including your boss and your mother, will read it. You and I know that. But, alas, some people continue to be clueless when it comes to being candid online comments.

Blogging buddy Nikki Woods told me to check out this article: Twitter gets you fired in 140 characters or less.

As I was researching this story, I found the following online comment. It's an example of how professional colleagues can have unpleasant experiences with those not versed in Twitter etiquette. According to the writer:

I had an experience where someone attempted to clown me professionally on twitter not realizing I was following them. And without a legitimate reason. It was all ego on their part. I kindly let that person know on a professional level that I saw there message! Needless to say they were embarrassed by their actions after the fact. One must learn social networking sites aren't the place to air out their frustrations. Lord knows I had to realize it. You never know who's watching.

If you do an online search, you'll find some sites that offer tips on Twitter etiquette. Two of the better ones appear on CIO and Fast Company.

Enough about niceties associated with social media. Let's talk about who uses it. We all know that communicators use Twitter, but what about your audience? Jessica Levco of Ragan.com hit the streets of Chicago find out who's heard of Twitter, and who's using it. Click here to view this report.

Maya Angelou quotes

One isn't necessarily born with courage, but one is born with potential. Without courage, we cannot practice any other virtue with consistency. We can't be kind, true, merciful, generous, or honest.

~ ~ ~

Courage is the most important of all the virtues, because without courage you can't practice any other virtue consistently. You can practice any virtue erratically, but nothing consistently without courage.

Experience exotic Jamaica in the fall

Nigel, a close family friend, often talks about his Jamaican roots. He was born in the U.S., but he’s always looking for an excuse to go back to the island where his father’s parents still live.

Nigel is a good resource when it comes to Caribbean culture and Jamaica vacations in particular. I’ve learned that this time of year is the perfect time to plan a fall getaway. Check in at the Ocho Rios hotels. Discover quiet coves, the bluest waters, and stunning beaches. If you’re into climbing, don’t miss Ocho Rios’ world-famous Dunn’s River Falls.

You may prefer to plan a super inclusive Jamaica vacation at Montego Bay, which is well known for its vibrant night life, Doctor’s Cave, and mountain top jungles. When you’re not taking in all of the action, you can relax in a hammock under a palm tree and dream to your heart’s content.

Most major airlines offer service to Jamaica. No matter which destination you choose, you’ll enjoy the study in contrasts, varying landscapes, and colorful culture that only Jamaica can offer. Experience Caribbean cuisine at its best. Plan now to see Jamaica in the fall and save big.

Quotes of the week

This has been the Obama administration’s lost week -- an anger-filled race to get out in front of a story that the White House has variously underestimated, fueled, belittled, and sought to channel. All President Obama has to do is revive the economy and end a war and fix healthcare and rescue schools and save the planet. But first he’s had to spend a week trying to get back a few million dollars from a government-owned insurance company.
-- Rick Klein, ABC News

My administration is now committed to diplomacy that addresses the full range of issues before us, and to pursuing constructive ties among the United States, Iran and the international community. This process will not be advanced by threats. We seek instead engagement that is honest and grounded in mutual respect.
-- President Obama, from his message to Iran

Caribbean Breezes

If you’re like me, the weekend just isn’t enough time to rejuvenate after a hectic work week. Now’s the time to think about this year’s special getaway, and the Caribbean has plenty of great destinations to fit the bill.

SuperClubs -- through Breezes Resorts -- has launched a new website to make it easy to search for your all inclusive vacation package. Take your pick from a great list of Caribbean resorts. You’ll find SuperClubs in:

  • Jamaica
  • Bahamas
  • Curacao
  • Dominican Republic
  • Panama
  • Brazil

I’m trying to decide between the laid-back charm of Jamaica -- or, for a markedly different Caribbean experience, checking out the tucked away island of Curacao.

Pick or an affordable package that includes all your meals, drinks, entertainment, and elegant accommodations. Enjoy the land and water sports, professional instruction included. Tipping isn’t allowed so you can concentrate on F-U-N. The idea is to get you far away from the real world, physically and mentally.

With all inclusive Caribbean vacations, you can take in the view, sample the cuisine, and relax in comfy accommodations. Surround yourself with breathtaking landscapes.

In Jamaica, reggae country, stroll along the white sandy beaches and view the rainforest-covered mountains. Or travel to the southern Caribbean to Curacao, off the coast of Venezuela. This small island is barely on the map, so it’s the perfect getaway if you don’t want to be disturbed. (My kind of place!) The charm of this paradise is the Dutch influence, along with the gentle trade winds and the amazingly beautiful water. The Dominican Republic, Brazil, and Panama boast their own unique attractions. Log on to Breezes.com, and get the details.

Caribbean resorts are ready to deal. Save big. Booking that spring or summer getaway is just a few mouse clicks away.

Paper cuts

Can the Internet save local news? Anyone who has been following the newspaper industry knows the picture is dismal. With each day seems to come more staff cuts and publication closings.

The Seattle Post-Intelligencer printed its last edition on Wednesday, nearly a century and a half after its forerunner rolled off it's first issue from a hand-cranked press. The PI now becomes an online venture at seattlepi.com. One can only wonder if online journalism is the business model of the future.

So far, in this year alone, U.S. newspapers have slashed more than 5,600 jobs through layoffs or buyouts. And the cuts keep coming. A story in USA Today, Newspaper closings raise fears about industry, takes an in-depth look at the state of print journalism.

Grow your business with Direct TV

I ditched cable a year ago and switched to Direct TV. I never looked back. To me, cable could not match the features and HD programming offered by satellite TV.

Many of my friends are business owners and managers, and I can’t wait to tell them about Direct TV for Business. Customized packages are available to corporations and small businesses, and they’re all affordable. In this economy, everyone is watching the bottom line. It's possible for my business friends to increase their clientele and not break the bank.

When I’m choosing a restaurant, I look for amenities, and 100% HD programming by Direct TV is one of them. I’m a die-hard news junkie, so any business that offers my favorite news channels gets two thumbs up from me. My male colleagues, meanwhile, are all about sports. Direct TV offers something for everyone: entertainment, news, information, and sports to customers and clients.

From time to time, we all find ourselves sitting in front of a receptionist, waiting for the dentist or a meeting with a business associate. I don’t like looking at four walls. That’s where Direct TV for Commercial comes in. The programming helps people like me to relax. I think the XM satellite radio offering is a real plus.

Even at the fitness room, my daughter and I find hitting the treadmill pretty painless if we’re watching our favorite shows. Put “The Real Housewives of Atlanta” on the screen, and my daughter is subject to walk an extra mile!

Direct TV for Business offers more than 40 packages – for Fortune 500 offices and small businesses. Installation is free, and pricing is based on the size of your company. Even start-ups can get more than 100 channels and still stay within budget.

In this economy, the organizations that survive are the ones that are able to grow their businesses, satisfy customers, and maintain an edge over the competition. It pays to stay ahead of the game.

Social networking, blogging now more popular than email

Social networking and blogging have now exceeded email as the most popular online activities. That's the conclusion of a new report released by Nielsen. According to the study, Global Faces and Networked Places(pdf), search and destination sites remain the most popular online activities.

Nielsen says that "two-thirds of the world’s Internet population visit social networking or blogging sites, accounting for almost 10% of all Internet time." The report went on to say that personal email has become "the world’s fourth most popular online sector after search, portals and PC software applications." The rankings are reflected in the chart above (courtesy Nielsen Online).

The total amount of time spent on Facebook rose by 566% -- from 3.1 billion minutes to 20.5 billion minutes. It's the ninth most popular brand online. Facebook also had the highest average time spent online per person -- averaging 3 hours, 10 minutes per person.

Nielsen attributes the rise of social networks in 2008 to Facebook alone. The report says that Facebook has replaced MySpace as the world's most popular social network.

People aged 35-49 years old represented the greatest growth in its number of audience numbers, with 24.1 million, followed by 13.6 million visitors aged 50-64, and 7.3 million under 18 year old.

Will we see marketers kicking email to the curb? I don't think so. However, this study does provide some great PR for social nets.

Sci Fi Channel announces name change

The Sci Fi Channel is changing its name ... unless you say it out loud.

NBC Universal-owned cable network will become Syfy starting in June. Many in the technology world greeted news of the new moniker with disbelief and cynicism. It didn't take long for the announcement to makes its way through the Twitter circuit.

The Syfy name also comes with a new logo. There's also a new tagline --"Imagine Greater." It's all part of a network-wide rebranding campaign that has been in the works for more than a year.

While the changeover at the network will take place in June, Syfy.com is already live.

Explore the United Arab Emirates

Not long ago, I watched a news story about the United Arab Emirates (UAE). My eyes were glued to the TV as I took in the images – the people, the culture, and magnificent views. I knew that lots of wealthy businessmen travel to the UAE, but could I?

I did a little research. I learned, to my surprise, that I don’t have to break the bank in order to vacation in the UAE. This desert region is now in my sights, and it’s not a mirage.

I may not have the expense account of a Donald Trump, but I can still plan an exciting trip on a budget. I checked out a new UAE .ae hotel site by Cheaperthanhotels. It's user-friendly and specifically designed for travelers to this region. For instance, visitors entering Dubai and Abu Dhabi may book luxury accommodations as well as discounted last-minute deals.

With a few mouse clicks, this UAE hotel site allowed me to search loads of databases for the best bargains on accommodations. Looking for rooms under $100 a night? This is the place to find them.

UAE travelers also have the choice of world-class airlines, including Etihad and Emirates. On a travel brochure, I saw an aerial view of Dubai at night. It was breathtaking. For me, Dubai is a must-see destination. The shopping malls are as legendary as the gorgeous white beaches.

When it comes to this oasis, or any of the other destinations in the UAE, I plan to do more than relax and shop. I want to experience the region’s rich history and culture. The United Arab Emirates may have a reputation for opulence, but it’s nice to know that there’s a place for me, too.

Google, Universal Music consider partnership

Universal, the world's largest music label, and Google's YouTube, the No. 1 U.S. video website, reportedly are in preliminary talks to create a stand-alone site to showcase music videos by Universal artists. Under the partnership, Universal would use YouTube technology and ad sales to distribute content around the Web.

The deal might be broadened out to include videos by artists at the other major music labels -- Sony Music, EMI Group and Warner Music Group -- in a concept similar to the TV shows available on NBC Universal and Hulu.com.

Many of the details, such as financial terms and whether the service would be run as a joint venture, are still being worked out.

Hollywood and ISPs team up to deliver video over the net

DVD, DVR and VOD are old school. Now there's ZillionTV. The company, backed by several major Hollywood studios, is an ad-supported video-on-demand system in which commercials are tailored to viewers, who can't fast-forward through them.

ZillionTV enables viewers to choose the categories of advertising that are most interesting to them, and commercials fitting the bill are inserted into TV shows and movies that are streamed via broadband onto TV screens.

Content comes from Warner Bros., Sony Pictures, NBC Universal, 20th Century Fox Television and Disney, all of which are invested in this startup. Forty other partners also supply content, and discussions are under way with Viacom and CBS. ZillionTV is promising 15,000 movie and TV titles by the end of 2009, when such TV shows as 30 Rock and Smallville and movies like The Dark Knight will be available on demand.

The system features a rewards program: The more commercials watched, the more points earned. Users wishing to avoid the ads can buy or rent content in a way similar to iTunes and Apple TV.

ZillionTV, however, is for streaming only. Purchased content is stored via Internet "lockers," not on a hard drive.

ZillionTV hopes to do for the set-top box market what Hulu has done for the PC. If you're like a lot of us, you're trying to keep up with the technology.

Hulu, if you're not familiar with it, is an online video service that offers hit TV shows, movies and clips at Hulu.com and other online destination sites — all for free. The service is available only in the U.S.

Hulu brings together a large selection of videos from more than 130 content providers, including FOX, NBC Universal, MGM, Sony Pictures Television, and Warner Bros. Users can choose from more than 1000 current prime-time TV hits such as The Simpsons, The Daily Show with Jon Stewart, and The Office the morning after they air; classics like Buffy the Vampire Slayer and The A Team; movies like Men in Black and The Karate Kid; and clips from popular shows of the past, such as Friends.

The backers of ZillionTV insist that they're offering a unique product. Once the service is operational, we'll get the opportunity to compare.

Business websites that get results

It’s difficult to be successful in business without a strong online presence. Any good marketing plan will include a web component. In a matter of seconds, each visitor to your site will decide if he or she wants to linger to see what you offer. If your site is dull or if your message is unclear, that visitor moves on with just one click of the mouse. Don’t let this happen to you.

Web development encompasses three standard elements: web design, web hosting, and web maintenance. Increasing website traffic is equally as important. Directly related to sales, it goes to your bottom line. Streamline operations and work smart. Find a company that demonstrates expertise in all of these areas. Doug Williams and Associates fits the bill.

Make sure that you have a plan in place for the best SEO results. SEO, or search engine optimization, involves the methodology for preparing your web page to be found when a potential customer enters a keyword during a search. This is what drives traffic to your site.

It’s crucial that your website gets noticed. An expert web developer delivers a business website design that creatively showcases your product or services and delivers your message in a compelling and engaging fashion. Your site needs to build trust, be easy to navigate, and be memorable. The operative word is impact.

A great website functions optimally with exemplary business web hosting. Web hosting is an art, so look for a provider that best fits your needs. Look for reliable uptime, tech support, security, and state-of-the-art servers.

Website maintenance is just as important. This includes the services of a webmaster, long-term maintenance, and emergency help. A good website is updated regularly and undergoes scheduled maintenance so that it functions well 24/7.

Studies show that 65% of customers research companies online before doing business with them. Make sure you’re prepared. Check out Doug Williams and Associates to see what they have to offer.

Easter, a time for family celebrations

Easter is April 12. My daughter Winnie and I are thinking about how we want to celebrate the holiday this year. Ours won’t be a flashy observance, but it will be colorful. We also want a get-together that both adults and children will enjoy. My teenage daughter is taking the lead on the planning.

Of course, we’re giving some thought to dinner and treats. Decorations are also important, so we're considering various Easter craft ideas.

Interestingly, Winnie, in many ways, is more of a traditionalist than I am. Decorated Easter eggs are must-haves. I can handle the coloring. Winnie, the artist in the family, will put her signature on the eggs with food-coloring markers and mini stencils. She’ll also create unique Easter baskets. One will be a table centerpiece. The others will be gifts to close family members and friends.

For our family, Easter is a religious holiday. I’d like place some of our favorite Bible scriptures on colored cards and place them on the dinner table.

Dinner is likely to consist of two meats – the traditional ham and another meat to be determined. Winnie and I would like to try lamb this year, but I think other family members will be happier with turkey or chicken. We’ll also have plenty of veggies and fresh fruit.

For dessert, I’ll buy cupcakes from my favorite bakery (to save time). I’ll have the younger kids in our family help me decorate them with bunnies and chicks.

With some good planning, we’ll complete much of the work ahead of time so that we can enjoy the holiday with our family. We’ll definitely have some fun activities for the little ones.

If you celebrate Easter, share your plans. No matter how you observe the holiday, I hope you’ll enjoy yours as much as we’ll treasure ours!
