The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) has begun notifying 60,000 renters and property owners in nine Louisiana and Mississippi parishes and counties that they will immediately receive as much as $26,200. That's the most Congress has authorized for individual households battered by Katrina. The Washington Post has details.

I'm wondering what they are doing for homeowners when it comes to their mortgages? Are they encouraging the banks to defer some payments. Heck, 26g's might just cover the backpayments.

is that good?

James, a lot of people would say you are right.

Rell, only you can determine for yourself if you think $26,200 is enough compensation for home owners and renters. If you exclude the federal government, I think most people would tell you that the amount is not nearly enough for Katrina victims trying to start their lives over again. This is especially true for those people whose homes were paid for.

One of the things people are watching is the redevelopment of New Orleans. There is great concern that people who were displaced by the hurricanes will not be able to return once new housing is built. Why? Because New Orleans natives will not be able to afford the new homes. Stay tuned.
